What is mometasone?

Mometasone furoate is a corticosteroid used to treat allergy symptoms such as asthma and hay fever. It is also used to treat skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis. Mometasone can be administered topically as a cream or ointment or inhaled with an asthma pump or aerosol.

Mometasone Uses

  • Asthma
  • Rhinitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Inflammation
  • Congestion
  • Allergies
  • Eczema
  • Nasal polyps
  • Cold & Flu symptoms

Mometasone is used to treat conditions that occur from allergies and other irritants. Symptoms such as a blocked nose, rashes and sores can all be eased using mometasone.

How does mometasone work?

Mometasone relaxes the immune system, easing the body's overreaction to viral or environmental irritants. It reduces inflammation in the respiratory tract, alleviating the symptoms of inflammation and allergies.

It works to soothe the inner lining of the nose, relax the chest and loosen mucus. When used regularly, Mometasone can prevent and reduce the instances of asthma attacks by inhibiting immune responses that make it difficult to breathe. As it is a long-term solution, Mometasone cannot reduce the symptoms of an asthma attack once the immune response has already been triggered.

Mometasone Dosages

The mometasone dosage for treating allergies in adults and children over 12 is two sprays a day per nostril. The dose for children aged 2-11 is one spray a day per nostril.

The dosage for treating nasal polyps in adults is two sprays in each nostril twice daily. Mometasone should not be used by children to treat nasal polyps.

When used topically, a cream with a 0.1% concentration should be applied thinly over the area once daily. The dose is the same for all ages, but mometasone should not be given to children under 2.

Mometasone Side Effects

Mometasone is safe to use, but it can cause some side effects, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Nosebleed
  • Dry skin
  • Rash
  • Acne
  • Thinning skin that is easily bruised
  • Inflammation
  • Slowed growth in children
  • Thrush
  • Blurred vision
  • Fever

Most side effects experienced from Mometasone – if any – are mild and will go away on their own. If you notice a fever, new rash, changed vision or feel nauseous or faint, check in with your doctor.

Mometasone should not be used on children under 2, and children of any age should take the lowest possible dose. Do not start your child on a new medication without the supervision of a doctor.
