What is lidocaine?

Lidocaine is a local anesthetic used to immediately numb small areas. It is used in medicine and dentistry for minor surgeries to inhibit pain and reduce bleeding. Lidocaine can be administered topically as a numbing cream, orally as a viscous solution, as ear or eye drops and intravenously or subcutaneously as a shot.

What is lidocaine used for?

  • Local Anesthetic
  • Ventricular tachycardia
  • Epilepsy
  • Chronic and acute pain
  • Gastritis
  • Shingles

Lidocaine is a pain reliever that is often used in advance of minor surgery or other painful procedures. It numbs the skin and tissue in the area that it is administered, allowing procedures and chronic or acute health conditions to be pain-free.

It is a local anesthetic first and foremost, but it is also used to treat some conditions directly.

How does lidocaine work?

Lidocaine works by inhibiting sodium's entry to the nerves and therefore preventing pain signals from reaching the brain. It also constricts blood vessels, reducing the flow of blood during surgery or injury.

What is the recommended dosage for lidocaine?

The recommended dosage for lidocaine is the same for each variety. When used as a local anesthetic, the ideal dose for 1% lidocaine is 4.5mg (or ml) per kg of bodyweight. The maximum dose is 300mg and 2400 mg in a 24-hour period when administered topically.

How to buy lidocaine

You can buy lidocaine online or at your local pharmacy, and it comes in many forms and concentrations. The number after the drug name indicates the concentration of the solution, so Lidocaine 1 has a 1% concentration, and Lidocaine 2 has 2%.

You can buy lidocaine cream over the counter in a concentration of up to 5%. Higher concentrations and other varieties of lidocaine are available with a prescription but often will need to be administered by a doctor.

Lidocaine patches can also be bought online, with a concentration of up to 4%. These combine lidocaine cream with hot or cold therapy to enhance pain relief.

If you are looking to use lidocaine anally, hemorrhoid cream with lidocaine can also be bought online.

Lidocaine Side Effects

Lidocaine is safe to use, but it does have some side effects.

More common side effects include:

  • Low blood pressure
  • Inflammation
  • Irritation
  • Digestive complaints
  • Tingling
  • Drowsiness
  • Disorientation

Less common side effects include:

  • Heart palpitations and Disorders
  • Seizures
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Hyperthermia
  • Low blood oxygen levels

Conditions lidocaine might help

Chronic and acute pain

Studies have found lidocaine to be an effective alternative to opioids for the treatment of severe and chronic pain. The research investigated pains associated with cancer, operations and neuropathy, and found that 5mg per kg of bodyweight administered intravenously was ideal but as little as 1mg/kg was significantly effective for reducing pain.

Epilepsy

Multiple clinical trials have found between 1 and 3mg of lidocaine per kg of bodyweight to effectively control seizures in patients with epilepsy. The treatment was best administered intravenously.

Gastritis

Research into the effect of lidocaine as a part of the treatment for gastritis has found that most doctors support its use, but that antacids are the preferred treatment. It was found that lidocaine may slightly improve treatment efficacy but might not be worth the additional cost.

Shingles

Studies show that 5% lidocaine patches are highly effective for treating the pain involved with shingles. Pain was reduced and minimal adverse reactions were reported.

Ventricular tachycardia

Clinical trials have found that 100mg of lidocaine administered intravenously can ease incessant ventricular tachycardia in some patients, but also that amiodarone might be the more effective treatment.
